| Studies: smaller, unframed pieces; exercises that serve as stepping stones as I work toward finished paintings.
Painting at 33 and 1/3: Like many, I listen to music when I'm working. I've always thought about my paintings in terms of music: harmony, dissonance, melody, overdubs, feedback. I enjoy transferring a production technique that I hear on a record to the painting process.
Last summer I began completing studies on a regular basis. To keep the work fresh and the process moving, I confine the study to the length of the album; when the music stops, the study is done. Then I post studies to the blog and provide some reflection on the painting and the music that accompanied it.
